Specifically, our research is concerned with the types of juvenile offenders who may be vulnerable to maladaptive drinking and drug use and the types of interventions that would be most useful in helping these youth to control their substance use behaviors. Three groups of juvenile offenders will be studied: (1) juvenile substance abusers, (2) juvenile dependent drug users, and (3) juvenile substance abusers who are not dependent drug users. The first group will be composed of well-defined cases of juvenile substance abuse whose drinking and drug use is judged by their juvenile probation officer to be problematic. The second group will be a group of juvenile drug users selected as dependent users, as determined by a reliable interview instrument. The third group of offenders will comprise substance abusers who do not meet the criteria for being dependent drug users. The groups will be contrasted on a number of clinical and demographic variables, and then their responses to group and individual treatment will be compared. In the group of substance abusers who do not meet the criteria for dependency, efforts will be made to identify the clinical and demographic variables that distinguish these offenders from substance abusers who meet the criteria for dependency. The data will be used to determine if the criteria for dependency can serve as a useful method of identifying juvenile offenders who are at high risk for alcoholism and who would benefit from individual treatment. As part of this project, our research group has developed a new psychological intervention program for juveniles who are substance abusers, but who are not dependent users. A study comparing the therapeutic efficacy of this intervention program and two versions of a more traditional substance abuse treatment program will be undertaken. The long-term goal of this project is to develop interventions that can be used to help juvenile substance abusers obtain greater control over their substance abuse.Q:
